Blackmagic add ProRes Export and capture to Resolve 19
Blackmagic put out an update to Resolve recently – version 19.1.4 – which seemed to have just a list of bug fixes, but the second item on the list is something very useful:
“Apple ProRes encode support on Windows and Linux.”
Nearly every editing program can make ProRes now (they never used to be able to) but Resolve could not. In my latest YouTube video about exporting in Resolve (https://youtu.be/tssJFHdVhig?si=0sFDoYi9fCKwOEUB) one of my tips was use Grass Valley as Resolve didn’t do ProRes. Now it has finally been added in both the free and Studio versions, and you can use it to capture as well as export. I have yet to test the capture but hopefully it will give us a format that works to capture analogue video into Resolve – there previously wasn’t anything that was useful.
I will still use Grass Valley as I use EDIUS and Grass Valley can do quality that is as good as ProRes but uses less space. However, for anyone who does not use EDIUS I would say use ProRes, if you ever want to get clips out of Resolve and into another program for more work. ProRes keeps up the quality and practically everything reads it.
