Blackmagic NAB revolution!
Blackmagic have released information about Resolve 16, as well as a public beta version, which you can download now. The revolution is a completely new CUT page which aims to take the edit page and trim it down to essentials to make editing quicker. One of the revolutionary new features of this page is that, if cameras are synced by timecode, you can have a main track laid out, and then choose a part of another clip to be overlaid and it will automatically insert it at the right place. There are quite a lot of other interesting features on this cut page which are aimed at speedy editing.
There are more new features in the rest of the program including better slow motion using “artificial intelligence”, new filters, better scopes, and a revamp of the Fusion page to make it faster and more reliable, plus a lot of other stuff.
The two versions remain – Studio and the free version – with the same overall differences but with some new stuff which is Studio only. If you already own Studio you get a free update to Resolve 16.
The public beta version is available now. Remember it is beta, and Blackmagic’s first public betas are always quite dodgy, so I would not recommend using it for any real work. If you install 16 it will update your projects so that they will not work in version 15 any more so make sure that, if you install it, you back up your projects first.
You can see a video on the new features here:
Grant Petty, Blackmagic’s boss, also did a long video about all the new things that have for NAB which you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21FcG-SGo1Y
You can download the new version here: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/davinci-resolve-and-fusion.
On first look I am not sure I would use the new CUT page – but then it is very early days and I might find it really useful if I put it through its paces – however, some of the other features look really useful to me; the new option to select a word from an ADR track in the Fairlight page and change its length to match the original dialogue without changing its pitch; the new object replace effect; chromatic aberration which I would use to “dirty up” CGI shots to make them more realistic and who would not want better quality slow motion?
Blackmagic also made an updated version of Fusion incorporating all the changes they made to the Fusion page of Resolve which is available now.
